The opening is not big enough but for my arm. It gives way! Part of the basement wall crumbles onto the floor below. With my last ounce I bring my leg to my chest and push. As I slither along the cold foundation of the house in a last attempt for refuge I feel a crack in the basement wall. There they are and they are coming for me. I crawl closer to the foundation of the house when I see something coming through the tall grass in the moonlight. Panic again as I realize I am surrounded. Time is short and the moans are multiplying. It wasn’t inside the house, it was out here with me. I am instantly rejuvenated by that same sense of panic as my ears take in a familiar sound. The sun is setting and whatever that was in the woods, there are more of them. Maybe a few hundred yards but it feels like miles. Farther through the woods I see a clearing. My loss of blood is critical and every part of me is numb. I can barely stand and the swirling is intensifying. I scurried away, that panic still hadn’t faded and luckily gave me the energy to run. Like a man you would find working in the woods but this was not a man, or at least not anymore. I only caught a glimpse of what came stumbling out of that dilapidated shanty but it was large and hungry. As I approached what I hoped would be my saving grace I heard it. The warped woods began swirling so I headed towards the first shelter I saw, a half-missing burnt out shack. As I stumbled through the woods knocking snow from the trees onto my head, I was barely able to maintain consciousness.
